Popular Religion

By Simba B.

Freedom of religion is guaranteed by the Kenya Constitution – right to religious freedom.Thankfully, religion is not a divisive issue in Kenya.

Christianity is perhaps the greatest of world’s religions in terms of numerical strength scattered in all corners of the world though perhaps not in terms of adherence to its teachings. In Kenya, it is estimated that about 65-70 % of the country’s population is Christian.

Through out the ages, Europeans have taken Christianity as their possession and used it as a tool to establish and maintain their control and suppression over other races. Yet Christianity was in Africa long before the coming of the Christian influence or missionaries of the 15th and 19th centuries respectively.

The history of Christianity dates back to the Pentecost event where the apostles assembled to await the Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus Christ. (Acts 12 presents the birth of the Christian movement after the death and resurrection of Jesus). In his last words, Jesus mandated the apostles to be his “witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:7-8). Then there was the succession question with regard to the position of Judas, then Acts 2-8 is on Christianity in Jerusalem, acts 8-12 is on Christianity outside Jerusalem but within Palestine, and Acts 12-18 begins with the Pentecost Event which marks the spread of Christianity outside Palestine throughout the then known world. Among the first places of “the end of the world” where Christianity spread within the early times is Africa: the first seeds of Christianity were sown in present day North Africa within the first centuries of the faith. Moreover, initial evangelization work lay significantly in the hands of Africans. If this be the case, then it seems that writers of Christian history may consciously or unconsciously have omitted and probably added certain facts to support their understanding of Christianity as a European religion. There is need to correct this impression.

Many churches have been started where Christians go to worship.colleges that train pastors and courses such as theology also exists.many who have done these courses have stable careers n they get their daily bread thanks to Christianity. I urge our innocent pagans to try out this religion because it will make a difference in their lives.

Fashion in Church

By Simba B.

Every occasion always needs a dress code to match it.this is important in order to avoid unnecessary embarrassing moments.People have always found themselves in awkward situations where they are differently dressed from the others hence feeling out of place.the church is not an exception, you also need a dress code for it since its a holy place.
For a long time, dressing for the church was no different as dressing for work(the office in this context),it was mostly decent and official.smart and casual was also accepted before the secular world had an impact on people. This influence was first and massive that even differentiating the ‘sinners’ from the ‘righteous’ now days is almost impossible.
This trending pattern was a topic of discussion for a long time, many staunch followers of religion(the clergy)condemned this and even drafted church laws that stated the type of dress code before they were criticized as judging the sinners which is against the holy book’s teachings. This shows how they were beaten in their own game so they had no choice but to accept it.Jesus came to fish the lost ones from sins,so accepting it was also fishing the lost ones.i believe this was their consolation.
So to our youngsters in campus,i asked some of them why they dress in such a manner to church and the response i got from one of them is that they wear what they feel comfortable in.another one told me that God does not look at the dress code but looks at your heart. To me this one sounded like a concrete reason.to the chicks,i also asked them why they at times want to tempt the pastors into sin by wearing short skirts that exposes private flesh, the answer i got left me tongue tied i.e my dress my choice.
Some dress codes honestly are not right for the holy place, but still am not allowed to judge.I rest my case.Lets all wait for the judgement day.

A new Religion?

to use

By Simba B.

According to the constitution of Kenya, article 32(1),Every person has the right to freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion.this clearly states that you can join any religion you want and worship in it.the most common religions in campus are Christianity,Islam and Hindu but a new one seems to have come up-devil worshiping

The dictionary defines devil worship as an expression of ardent love, devotion towards a cultural scapegoat figure (a devil)that is reclaimed as a slandered divinity.this means that it is not the worship of evil but rather an attack against all purely dualistic good vs. evil rhetoric. It is also called theistic Satanism.satanism has always been associated with rituals, sacrifices, cults and even Illuminati.

Every Devil worshiper is entirely capable of performing their own rituals, by and for themselves. You don’t need any kind of officiating priest or guru to help you.instead, you should view yourself as your own priest. Technically, you do not even need to have an altar or candles or anything. Whenever you feel like you need to conduct a Satanic ceremony, for whatever purpose, all you really need is yourself.

In our campuses today,Illuminati is now a common thing that is on the rise each passing day.stories are told of students who sacrifice their families, relatives and friends just to join the cult and sow the fruits that come with it.the most common favors that makes youngsters join these devil worshiping related practices are money, fame, protection from enemies and power.stories are told that if you sacrifice any closest member of your family, your heart desires are fulfilled instantly.to many, this is as easy as a snap of your finger so they go for it.

Am yet to meet and interact one on one with a student who is in this practice. Most of them don’t openly admit,i bet its because this religion values secrecy.this is not the case with some common figures. Musicians, actors, comedians and even politicians have often been accused of being members.i guess it because of the fact that they earned their fame out of the blues.they therefore use their status to influence other innocent members of the society into joining them.

To make these claims appear true, enough evidence has also been found to support it.the most common are signs e.g pyramids, one eye, skull image, spider webs just to name a few. Music and movies are also used to recruit members thanks to those actors and musicians who are claimed to have sold their souls to the devil for fame.in Nairobi,a satanic church is said to exist, where the devil is worshiped.these are signs of the end times as Christians would say it and since they also condemn this worship.

Being that the constitution allows anyone to choose their own religion, you are free to worship the devil but just remember that the judgement day is coming, exist, where the devil is worshiped.these are signs of the end times as Christians would say it and since they also condemn this worship.

Being that the constitution allows anyone to choose their own religion, you are free to worship the devil but just remember that the judgement day is coming.

Night vigil redefined?

People have different ways in which they end their days. Some can decide to chill out in their homes and rest while others can hang out in entertainment joints and wind down a glass or two. For Christians, they can also welcome the next day in church. For a long time, there was a tradition that Christians usher in the next month by attending night vigils. This was also to thank God for His mercies the entire month and to ask Him for a next successful month. These night vigils were always held every last Friday of the month until recently when the youngsters started being targeted by churches.

The ‘digital trends’ took over by storm and they seem to be the in thing now. It all started by the night vigils being turned into concerts dubbed, FNL(Friday Night Life) this refers to a concert where the night vigils were upgraded in order to reduce the boredom of the long night. This was done by introduction of gospel artists to entertain the congregation, bible games and studies and even simple competitions that saw winners being awarded give a ways and prizes. All this was meant to keep the night long service lively and also to attract a larger crowd.

Away from churches, this trend still applies. Event organizers and celebrities are now targeting campus students. This is evident by the numerous number of Christian concerts and events that are now being hosted in different institutions. In a nutshell, these events are held every last Friday night of the month, different gospel musicians , Djs and dancers entertain the crowd ,an entrance fee is charged before getting into where the main action is.

This clearly shows that this new trend has swiftly kept off students from the usual night vigils(owing to the crowds that show up for this events)when the organizers are asked for the reasons as to why the hold down such concerts, the obvious answer they give is, to spread the gospel. Ain’t ok with this idea because i don’t believe in paying in order to receive the gospel o me, they are more after making money.

Good examples of these events that are now running our airwaves and trending are the groove party, the campus vibe, totally sold out and FNLs organized by different churches
As the world is changing, religious patterns are also changing.

Am waiting to see where the Christian fraternity is heading to in the coming years. As your resident observer, I will be here to keep you posted.

Strange Religious Patterns

Its one hot Tuesday afternoon, 12.45pm, 15 min before the lecture is adjourned for lunch break. Margret isn’t patient enough to wait for the class to be dismissed, so she excuses herself and leaves, destination-CHURCH! Welcome to the religious world in campus

I am a Christian and I understand very well that we have the right to worship anywhere and at anytime but I am not quite familiar with this worshiping pattern in my campus. When you talk of a Tuesday afternoon to most campus students, their minds quickly shift to the great’ Terrific Tuesday’ going down at pizza inn and certainly not church

Now this is where a thick line is drawn between two groups,’ the saved’ and the ‘unsaved’. Am not trying to criticize the Christian Union (C.U) member s on their faith but this is where they go against the Bible’s teachings. The definition of a Christian according to a C.U member, are the likes of Margret, people who go to church seven days a week. Where the hell in the Bible is such a thing even stated? This is also where they call people like us /we go to church only on Sundays/ who engage in worldly things the entire week as Christian wannabes.

I don’t agree with them that going to church daily makes me a saint or rather, a Christian. Christianity depends on how strong your faith is i.e. in your heart. Going to church is only a bonus for you to get the teachings and how to maintain that faith plus also how to strengthen it. This clearly shows that it is not a must for you to be in church daily.

So for the C.U members who are so into discriminating people like me and calling us non-Christians, don’t choke on the sauce! First understand your religion well and its norms then we can now give you room to judge us. Religious world in campus would be more fun this way.
